Analyze policy issues related to use and trade of products extracted from palms and other plants and their management; promote sustainable management, targeting decision-makers with relevant information- and decision tools.
This objective has been achieved through a review paper of the regulations and laws for NTFP and palms in the four study countries. We gather information in workshops carried out in each country. The practices of harvest, use, management and trade were documented in collaboration with WP3 (Uses), WP4 (Trade) and WP5 (Management) particularly in the two published books of the project (Deliberable, Mo 54). The following seven chapters are the most relevant:

To achieve this objective we did the review paper and organized stakeholders workshops in the four study countries. We selected species and products to carry out studies (thesis of WP6 and WP5), interviews and search for previous study cases to identify obstacles. A further analysis will be presented in the final deliverable of PALMS (D13).
To identify ways to influence the political system, we did a strategy and develop actions to communicate information and influence the political system. The strategy included interactions with different institutions and national projects in the study countries (in Ecuador we establish agreements with CORPEI-Biocomercio Andino and with Fundación Chankuap). Some information of study cases are presented in the project books and a specific chapter about practical cases and legislation functioning is analyzed in the Ecuadorian book:
De la Torre L. & R. Valencia. 2013. Legislación: de la teoría a la práctica. Pp. 45-54, Chapter 5 in: Valencia et al. (eds.), Palmas ecuatorianas: biología y uso sostenible. Publicaciones del Herbario QCA de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador.
We prepared two books to achieve this objective.
Valencia R., R. Montúfar, H. Navarrete & H. Balslev. 2013. Palmas Ecuatorianas: Biología y Uso Sostenible. Publicaciones del Herbario QCA de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Quito.
Bernal, R. & G. Galeano (eds.). In press. Cosechar sin Destruir. Editorial Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Instituto de Ciencias Naturales-Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá.
We also did a direct collaboration with official institutions in Ecuador (Project Biocomercio Andino, Fundación Chankuap), Colombia (National Strategy of Conservation), Peru (Strategy of Biological Diversity) and Bolivia (Vice-Ministry of Science and Technology).
